"The only disability in life is a bad attitude" --Scott Hamilton
"If a child cannot learn in the way we teach ... we must teach in a way the child can learn."
After one year teaching adapted martial arts at Hyliard Community center in Eugene, OR, we decided to give this opportunity to adults and teens with special needs, also in our location.
Some kids with Autism and ADHD have been already learning in our school since we started our business.
Kids with different needs are successful included in the classes for kids with no special needs. The results we are having with some kids are the demonstration that it is possible to teach martial arts and motor skills to kids with special needs: we just have to understand how.
To obtain results it is important that the parents believe in the possibility to reach goals. It is important to discuss together witch goals both parents and instructors want to reach.
Moreover it is important that the kids try at home, to enforce what learned in class, so that they can do better, learn quicker with a gain in confidence. A very good thing to do for parents is join themselves the courses to help the kid and share the experience.
The goals with special needs include not only the martal arts curriculum, but also results on:
-motor skills, in particular the coordination
-social skills
-self confidence
-discipline
-focus
-balance physical and psychic
-patience
The physical activity is important especially for people with ADHD because it permits to use some of their hyperactivity. Moreover, the exercise associated with the discipline may take away some of their impulsive behaviors.
It is also important the continue repetition of forms and movements that permits to organize their thoughts in their mind, increasing the ability to focus.
All these things benefit also Autism and other deficits.
Martial programs are highly recommended for children suffering from Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, speech and other developmental conditions.
KIDS WITH DIFFERENT NEEDS ARE WELCOME IN OUR KIDS CLASSES,
since we experiment that being between kids with no special need enforce their self esteem and encourage them to increase their skills. Moreover the other kids learn to respect and understand people with special needs. Kids don't see so many differences between people as adults do....
WE HAVE SPECIFIC CLASSES FOR ADULTS AND TEENS
since at that age, a slower learning compare to others may be frustrating.
